Profile of Richard J. Hayes, Jr.
Communications Attorney
I am a communications attorney. My practice is located
in Warrenton, Virginia and it is limited to matters before the Federal
Communications Commission. I am a member of the State of Georgia Bar
Association.
I haven't always been a lawyer. At the age of 13, I started in radio as
the kid who took out the garbage, cleaned the bathroom and changed the
ribbon on the UPI machine. By the time I graduated from college, I had
been an announcer, newsman and summer fill-in jock. After college, I went
into radio sales and was one of the top two salesmen in a market of 28
stations. I worked as a sales manager and went on to be a general manager.
I got my law degree in Washington, D.C. and then decided to start my own
practice. I owned a station in Spotsylvania, Virginia but sold it a few
years ago. As you can see, I have had a lot of experience in radio
stations. My background as a manager, and as an owner who built his own
station, has also proved to be invaluable since many of my clients are also
building their own stations. I am able to help them make decisions which
save them money and get them on the air faster. So, I’m not just a book
lawyer. I’m a communications lawyer who knows the business of broadcasting
as only an owner could. The range of projects I work on for clients runs
from getting power increases for AM and FM stations to drafting Local
Marketing Agreements. I have done hundreds of new AM and FM station
applications and I have worked extensively with clients in helping them to
buy and sell broadcast
properties. The thing I am most proud of is the fact that I have helped
many of my clients become millionaires! They started with nothing more
than a dream and have built impressive portfolios of profitable stations
in small and medium markets.
When a client comes to me for help. I don't just limit my involvement to
paperwork and lawyer stuff, I get involved in the whole project. Several
clients have told me that they feel like I am like a big brother who wants
to help them get ahead; someone who understands their dreams and treats
their project as though it was his own. Nice compliments! My experience in
the whole broadcast business makes this possible.
